Sofa Sizes – Key Shopping Elements

Measure once, cut zero!
The first thing people do when they consider buying a sofa is measure the space they have to put the sofa into. This is an obvious start to sofa shopping; however what some people do not consider is the size of the doorways, hallways and elevators that the sofa will need to pass through in order to get it to the final room destination. This is especially true for apartment buildings that may have long narrow hallways and smaller then average doorways. Make sure to consider the width, height and depth of the sofa in comparison to the obstacles in its delivery path. In the event of an emergency, there are companies that specialize in taking apart sofas so that they can fit through these tight spaces.

Seating Space
All sofa sizes are not equal when it comes to seating space. Although the outside length of the sofa will tell you how it will fit in your room, the inside dimension of the sofa will tell you how many people you can fit on your couch. A sofa with a smaller arm will offer more seating space then a sofa with a large roll arm. Make sure to consider the inside seating dimensions as well as the outside dimensions when looking at sofa sizes.

Consider the Scale of your Space
Although you may want a large, plush, roll arm sofa, it may not look right in a smaller room with low ceilings. Make sure you consider the scale of the sofa for your particular room. Even if the sofa “fits”, you want to consider the overall aesthetic of the room.

Don’t Forget the Height
A lot of people only consider the 2D plan views of their room and forget to consider the height of the sofa. Not all sofa backs are equal. Make sure the check any window sill heights, vents or other obstructions that you may not want the sofa to block.

Don’t Forget the Depth
Along the same lines as the height of the sofa, people forget to properly consider the depth of the sofa as well. Make sure to take into account any base moldings or chair rail moldings that are protruding from the wall which the sofa will be up against. These couple of inches can make or break some spaces.

When shopping for your perfect sofa size, remember to think in 3D and to consider the width, height and depth of your sofa and your space.
Happy Shopping!
